Vršič to Trenta and to Hotel Lek

After a night of rain, wind and impressive storms at Tičarjev Dom at 1611m and awakening to pea soup outside, we decided against a mountain day and instead descended into the Soča valley to Trenta. Our newly purchased poles were somewhat useful when crossing rivers in spate! The so-called emerald river was indeed rather green albeit a little full.

09:00 - Rush hour on the pass

Evidence of a newly created stream bed on the path

Not using this bridge at our own risk...

After catching our local bus back to KG, rather cold and wet, and having seen the latest forecast, we said fond farewell to our beloved campsite and its owner and checked into a hotel.

Full use was made of the pool, jacuzzi, whirlpool and balcony (for drying kit and brewing tea)

We are now eagerly awaiting the arrival of Nicola and Mani tomorrow for our 3 day expedition and trip to Klagenfurt.

Down days and Al Capone

If was decided that Monday ought to be a laundry/rest/down/recovery/planning day. So the most energetic we got was consuming a pizza for lunch in our 'home town' of Kranjska Gora and avoiding a siesta!

Untangling the epic washing line

Tuesday seemed an ideal opportunity to do something touristy as the stormy forecast didn't lend itself to mountainous activities. Caught the bus to Radovljica, had a guided tour and enjoyed a hop-on hop-off bus trip to Bled and its lake, although no swimming.

After a night of heavy rain and further thunder and lightning, we left the tent at the site and made our way up to Tičarev Dom at the top of the Vršič pass, by bus! Watched the storms and torrential rain from the cosy dining room window and contemplated what Thursday might bring.

Our host at the Dom reminded us of Al Capone. However it seemed like the weight of the world was resting on his shoulders.

We reckoned there were two scenarios:
1. He was gutted about the weather as it meant very few guests hence very
little business.
2. He was looking forward to a quiet night in and was most disappointed to have to look after 6 foreigners who just seemed to be an inconvenience at all times, by just being there.

We think he does have a sense of humour. It's just very deeply buried. His English is very limited but we managed to understand his Slovenian German.

We had the feeling it was past our bedtime, at 21.50 when he was mopping round our tables. He kindly ushered us across his nice clean floor to the stairs and his response to Charlie's question about when is a good time for breakfast: Sechs Uhr Neunundfünfzig weiter! (6.59 onwards!)

At breakfast when Charlie asked for just eggs (as opposed to ham and eggs), he asked "Well how many? 1? 2? 3? 4?"

We were chuffed to walk away having spent a mere €43 which included dinner with 2 beers, bed and breakfast for both of us.

Planja, Razor and back to camp

Stunning views from the summits of Planja and Razor (2601m) having left the hut at 7am. We then descended the most interesting path down to the top of the Vršič pass.

An awesome start to trekking and hutting in Slovenia. The hut was absolutely heaving, probably about 3 times its capacity but they gave us such a warm welcome and they were certainly not in a position to turn people away at over 2000m!

Sleeping next to a man who started snoring in the overcrowded hut, Charlie muttered the immortal words...
"Oh no!"
"He's really revving up now."
"Shall I just knee him in the balls?"

Good morning chammy chamois!

Bewildered at the sight of the VF route, which was new following a rock fall affecting the previous ascent

Križ, Stenar and Bovški Gamsovec

Day 2 was a circuit from the hut, taking in 3 peaks. Although in mist most of the day, we did catch glimpses of the impressive north face of Triglav (Slovenia's highest peak, at 2864m). We also saw chamois and an ibex.

One of many...

Triglav

Spot the ibex!

Mihov Dom to Pogačnikov Dom

Walking to catch the bus from Kranjska Gora up the Vršič pass to Mihov Dom. Day 1 of a 3 day expedition into the Julian Alps.

This photo requires an explanation...

On our scramble ascent of the Kriška Stena wall - about 300m of climbing in stunning surroundings.

Upon reaching our highest point of the day, after 1200m of ascent, we were pleased to see our home for the next two nights, only an hour away.

A well earned grapefruit Radler!
